BREEDING SUCCESS IN ASIA’S NEXT GROWTH MARKETSri Lanka has emerged as one of the fastest growing countries in Asia over the past few years. The Asian Development Bank forecast that GDP growth will grow 5.3% in 2016 and accelerate to 5.8% in 2017- among the fastest in the region. This growth is driven by infrastructure development, building & construction, tourism, strong domestic consumption and investments.
Agriculture, in particular the livestock and dairy production sector looks set for sustained growth as the industry adopt modern feed and farming systems to meet increasing demand. This is seen in the dairy sector where large commercial farms has boosted production despite the drop in the number of farms. Sri Lanka’s total milk production in 2014 increased by 9.8% compared to 2013.
This is more signicant in poultry production where broiler production has increased by 4% whereas the egg production has increased by 7.6% in year 2014 compared to 2013. The commercial poultry feed production has also increased by 10.9% supporting the expansion of the industry.
With chicken meat consumption at only 7.19 kilo per capita and egg per capita at 107 as of 2014, the feed and poultry production sector looks set for impressive growth as investments in modern farming systems get underway.
